Built stating in September, 1939 by the Army Corp of Engineers, it was known as Borinquen Army Air Field, until September 18, 1948, when it was named Ramey Air Force Base. This was in honor of Brigadier General Howard K. Ramey (1896-1943, who was killed in the South Pacific on a reconnaissance mission during World War II.
